Data quality

How politician and official trades are checked before they reach the site, what is held back and why, and the corrections we have made.

The rule

  • Every row that comes in from the disclosure data is either stored or held back in a quarantine with a written reason. Nothing is dropped silently.
  • Each run checks that incoming rows = stored rows + held-back rows.
  • Amounts and the direction of a trade (buy or sell) are never changed automatically. Automatic corrections touch only the ticker, the date or whose filing it is, and each one must rest on the original filing.
  • When our page and the original filing disagree, the original filing is right.

Held back, by reason

The site holds 66,723 politician and official trades. 13,353 incoming rows have been held back at some point; most were never trades in scope.

Out of scope

10,848

Excluded by design, not collection errors: the site covers purchases and sales of stocks and options only.

Corrections

  1. Abbreviated company names matched to tickers

Filings often abbreviate company names (“BLUE OWL CAP INC”, “NTNL BK HLDGS CORP”, “WSTN DIGITAL CORP”), which did not match the full names SEC lists, so those trades stayed in quarantine. When a name as written does not match, name resolution now tries it with abbreviations expanded or contracted and takes a ticker only when every spelling agrees; each new match was checked by hand. 76 rows found their ticker: 57 are on the site and 19 still wait on a doubtful date. Ambiguous names (the old and today's Albertsons) are still left unmatched.

  2. CAST CORP matched to the wrong company

CAST CORP in an OGE 278-T was matched automatically to the ticker CAST, which SEC lists as FreeCast. The evidence does not settle the right ticker, so the trade went back to quarantine, the match was switched off, and it cannot be learned again.

  3. “(THE)” and a private fund read as tickers

The THE in “COCA COLA COMPANY (THE)” was read as a ticker (THE is a delisted company), and the private “MSD Holdings, LP” was matched to the listed fund MSD. 18 trades in Coca-Cola, Hershey, Mosaic and The Trade Desk now carry KO, HSY, MOS and TTD; the MSD trades went back to quarantine. Automatic matches must now share a keyword with the issuer's name.

  4. Scanned-report years misread, restored from the original

Donald Trump's September OGE 278-T is a scan, and upstream text recognition read the year on rows 232–1024 as 2024. Those rows were held back, then checked line by line against the text layer of OGE's official PDF: 697 rows were restored with the right year, and rows with no matching text stay held back.

  5. Trades without a ticker are no longer dropped silently

Rows without a ticker used to be skipped with no count and no record, which is how three of Donald Trump's Strategy (MSTR) trades went missing. Now every row is either stored or held back with a reason, and about 3,100 stock trades whose ticker is clear from the issuer's name were added back.

Only corrections that change what a reader would conclude are listed here; routine automatic fixes are counted above.

Legal filing delays

  • SEC Form 13F: Due within 45 days after each quarter ends; a snapshot of quarter-end holdings.
  • STOCK Act PTR: Members of Congress file within 30 days of notification and no later than 45 days after the trade, with no extensions.
  • OGE 278-T: Executive-branch officials follow the same 30/45-day rule, but their agency may approve an extension.
  • SEC Form 4: Company insiders file within 2 business days of the trade.

GuruTrack updates after new filings appear; the data is not real-time. Late filings are marked on each politician's page.
